CAMP PACIANO RIZAL, Sta. Cruz Laguna—Three girls drowned in a deep portion of the man-made Caliraya Lake in Cavinti Laguna Sunday afternoon, police on Wednesday said. The victims were identified as sisters Sofia May, 15, and Roma May, 13, both surnamed Virata, and their friend Lovelyn Guerrero, 12. Police Inspector Bart Jamito, deputy police chief of Cavinti in a phone interview, said the victims were with adult companions when they decided to spend Sunday afternoon following a Christian church activity in Cavinti.

| The victims’ parents, meanwhile, were at their homes in Pililia, Rizal. “The group was having a picnic at the lakeshore when the victims decided to go for a swim (at around 1 pm),” Jamito said based on witnesses’ accounts. He said the water level in the lake closer to the shore is about waist-deep but is deeper when closer to the center. Police said the victims and another friend Rodalyn Belwan, 15, had swam about 150 meters from the shore. Quoting Belwan’s accounts, Jamito said the girls were resting on a large rock in the middle of the lake when Sofia May slipped into the water. Her sister, Roma May, and Guerrero, jumped into the water in an attempt to save the first girl. Belwan meanwhile swam back to the shore and sought help. |
Jamito said police and army rescuers stationed nearby responded to the scene and plucked out the bodies of Guerrero and Roma May. It however took them nearly an hour to recover Sofia May’s, which sank about 30 feet down the lake. Caliraya Lake that covers the towns of Cavinti, Lumban, and Kalayaan also serves as a reservoir supplying the water to the Caliraya Hydroelectric plant. (Arlene P. Mariposque)
