Year 2001 was designated by the United Nations as International Year of Volunteers. Now, 10 years later, the Philippine Red Cross Laguna Chapter joins the UN and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in the celebration of 2011 as the International Year of Volunteers. This is an opportunity to join global efforts to revive and advance the spirit of volunteerism to address today’s humanitarian challenges. The Philippine Red Cross Laguna Chapter in partnership with the City of Santa Rosa Red Cross Branch will celebrate the 2011 International Year of Volunteers and will also launch the Red Cross 143 on June 25, 2011 at SM City Santa Rosa Event Center from 1:30-4:00 in the afternoon with a theme Finding Volunteers Inside You. The event will be participating in by more than 1,300 volunteers from all over the province of Laguna. Chairman Richard “Dick” Gordon will lead the celebration.
The Red Cross began because of act of volunteering.Recalling our 152-year history of voluntary service to the needs of the people, the Red Cross Red Crescent has rooted volunteering in its values and humanitarian principles. Henry Dunant, the father and one of the founders of the Red Cross Movement was the first volunteer.
Every minute millions of volunteers touch lives of people across the globe. Volunteerism continues to be a cultural tradition upheld and practiced by the Filipinos. Volunteering often starts at home: but together, volunteers can change the world. Email us at laguna@redcross.org.ph and be part of our humanitarian endeavor. // Submitted by: Arlene P. Mariposque
