Jose Rizal, whose celebration of its 150th natal year was on last June 19, fought for the rights of his fellow countrymen according to his own principle and freewill. He even thought that “It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming a part of any edifice”. During the celebration and unveiling of the tallest Rizal monument in the country, five (5) UPLB students and two (2) Anakpawis members staged a lightning rally with the call for quality and free education while the president, H.E. Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III, was having a speech for the said event.
Furthermore, there were two other demonstrations staged on that same day and place. One was from the different groups in Southern Tagalog and the other was Canlubang Coalition who pushes for their agrarian rights in Hacienda Yulo. Overall, the June 19 event was a perfect day to raise the issues of basic rights as citizens not just because of the presence of the President of the Philippines, but moreso, it was a day to fully realize the ideals and principles of our national hero who zealously fought for his countrymen.
| Thus, the University Student Council (USC) of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos (UPLB), the highest governing body of UPLB students as stated in Section 1, Article IV of the USC-CSC Constitution, calls for the orderly release of CALAMBA 7, and in focus to UPLB 5 (namely Ruffa Solano, Catherine Gigantone, Michael Jason Mozo, Ynik Ante, and Bhen Aguihon) who were detained and apprehended for over forty-eight (48) hours at Philippine National Police- Calamba City. They were charged of “Alarm and Grave Scandal” and are now waiting for the release order from Regional Trial Court in Cities at Calamba City with a bail amount of Php 6,000.00 per individual. |
Furthermore, the USC subscribes that “education is a right and not a privilege and it should be afforded to everyone” as cited in Section 1, Article II of USC-CSC Constitution. The USC strongly expresses its principle that education be, first and foremost, the prime responsibility of any administration as it is also prescribed in the 1987 Philippine Constitution, that each and every citizen has a right for education. With the CALAMBA 7 calling on the attention of the general public for a truly consultative and democratic society for the social transformation and educational reform, USC believes that the apprehended young people has in every right to demonstrate and to express grievances as experienced by the students of UPLB.
