DOLE Provides Livelihood Assistance to Japan Crisis Affected Workers in CALABARZON

Japan’s earthquake, tsunami and nuclear leaks brought pressure not only in global economy but also in Philippine economy specifically in CALABARZON region.  There are a number of Japanese owned companies in the region who were forced to temporary shutdown, lay-off workers and lessen the number of working days.  Companies mostly affected are those which supply computer chips and automotive industry. In response to said crisis, DOLE IV-A through its Provincial Offices in CALABARZON immediately took action to address the adverse effects of the crisis to the workers in the region by providing livelihood assistance to the affected workers through Workers Income Augmentation Program (WIN-AP) and NegoKart Project.


Prioritizing the automotive industry, DOLE IV-A allocated Nissan Motor Philippines Supervisory Union (bigasan project), Ford Employees Cooperative (souvenir products) and Automotive Interior Corporation Associated Multi-Purpose Cooperative (groceria project) companies in Laguna P800,000 for the implementation of their identified projects. The funding assistance for Ford Employees Cooperative and Automotive Interior Corporation Associated Multi-Purpose Cooperative in the amount of P250,000.00 and P300,000.00 respectively were released on 24 May 2011.   Additional twenty five (25) Nego-Karts in the amount of P487,504.00 are available for distribution to the affected workers.  Likewise, the informal sector workers will be benefitted  this month.  In Cavite, DOLE IV-A will be releasing before the end of this month, livelihood assistance to Mother Bonifacia Rodriguez Foundation, Inc. the amount of P829,400 to increase the production capacity to produce healthy seafood snacks and other related products for export and Imus Institute Like Skills Development Center was granted with P100,000 for the establishment of computer repair project.  The Magallanes Women’s Club Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MAWCO) availed P980,000 for the production improvement of muscovado raw sugar from juice extraction using carabao-driven wooden mills to motorized or engine driven stainless steel grinding machine.

 

A total amount of P1,275,000.00 was obligated by DOLE IV-A to assist 820 workers affected by the Japan crisis.  Also, P1,909,400 will be provided as livelihood assistance for additional income to 271 informal sector workers.  A grand total in the amount of P3,184,400.00 was utilized benefitting 1,091 for said livelihood projects for May 2011. A MOA signing between and among 21 agencies, organizations and private companies on the implementation of a package of interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of Japan crisis will be on    2 June 2011.DOLE IV-A will continue to help not just the Japan crisis affected workers but also to the public in need of livelihood and employment assistance. // Arlene P.
