CAMP VICENTE LIM, LAGUNA—The police chief of Pangil in Laguna died of cardiac arrest during the biking activity of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) Saturday morning.
Police Senior Inspector Argel Guenizo, in his mid 40s, was pronounced dead on arrival at the St. Cabrini hospital in Tanuan Batangas, said regional police director Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. in a press briefing here.
“Sr. Inspector Arnel Guanizo succumbed to heart attack,” Pagdilao announced, but did not provide details saying they have yet to receive the official hospital report.
The 35-kilometer biking started at around 6:30 am from San Pablo city and passed through the towns of Alaminos in Laguna, Sto. Tomas in Batangas, and finally to Calamba city, Laguna.
Guanizo seemed fine when he overtook the Inquirer and the other bikers on the trail.
Laguna police director Sr. Supt. Gilbert Cruz said Guanizo was “physically fit” and never missed any of their biking activities. He said Guanizo had just returned from Bicol last night but instead of taking his rest, had attended to his work “He could be over-fatigued,” Cruz said.
Pagdilao said police officers undergo a semestral physical check up and Guanizo had passed them. He also said ambulances and police mobiles were available during the biking activity.
The Padyak para sa Kapayapaan was the peace advocacy campaign of the CALABARZON PNP for the upcoming peace negotiations. It started in December in Laguna and went through the four other provinces until the final leg on Saturday.
At least 1,000 police and civilian bikers, divided into two contingents from Cavite and the other from Laguna, joined the activity. PNP Director General Raul Bacalzo, Presidential Communications Group head Secretary Sonny Coloma, and Vice President Jejomar Binay came as guests, although the police chief’s death was not mentioned during the formal program. //Submitted By: Arlene P.Mariposque
