DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo joined the Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) in inaugurating the first online science and technology library in the Philippines held in conjunction with the 24th anniversary of STII. Called STARBOOKS, or the S&T Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations, students and researchers will soon be able to access this new academic resource in key areas in the Philippines. Thus, they will be able to avail themselves of the latest in on-line information and research for free.
“STARBOOKS is our humble contribution to education and science. Its introduction demonstrates to us that time and distance can be neutralized. Now they are no longer limiting factors for our youths in undertaking research,” Secretary Montejo said. He added, “We, at DOST, shall always support initiatives that encourage our people to advance new ideas because this kind of knowledge explosion can inspire development of entrepreneurship and research skills needed for socio-economic development.”
Since his assumption, Secretary Montejo has aligned the Department’s priority thrusts toward providing science and engineering-based solutions to national problems. As a result, this has won for DOST wide cross-sectoral support for programs addressing various issues. Among these are freshwater fishkills in Luzon, water hyacinths clogging rivers and waterways, city flooding, malnutrition, and availability of potable water for marginalized communities.
